Times to Launch Tabloid Edition Outside London

UK daily broadsheet The Times will next week launch its two-size format outside London for the first time.

Parent News International -- a unit of Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation -- has announced that, as of Monday, the paper's tabloid edition will be on sale alongside the broadsheet in the Carlton, Anglia, Meridian, Central and Granada television regions.

The move hikes the print run of the compact Times to over 250,000 and extends the format to the Midlands, north-western England and the south-east. Until now it has been on sale only in the Greater London area.

The Times launched its tabloid edition in November following the runaway success of The Independent, which pioneered the compact, commuter-friendly format two months earlier [WAMN: 24-Nov-03] -- the first upmarket newspaper to do so. Sales of both papers have risen as a result, and The Independent has already launched its smaller version nationwide.

"The compact has created a significant new audience for The Times and it has been extremely well received by industry and readers alike," declared Clive Milner, managing director of Times Newspapers.

All eyes are now on rival broadsheet the Daily Telegraph, executives at which have declared they have a tabloid format "ready to go".
