Time Settles Magazine Subscription Claims

24 March 2006

NEW YORK - The publisher has agreed a $4.5 million (€3.7m; £2.6m) settlement with 23 US states after being accused of "deceptive" subscription renewal practices for its magazines.
Investigators said Time had either billed consumers or charged credit cards for "unwanted or unordered subscriptions" after readers were left confused because automatic renewal offers were designed to look like billing invoices.
The payout, which has been reached without any admission of wrong doing by Time, will compensate around 108,000 magazine readers.
