Ten Websites Singled Out for Impact on UK

31 December 2003

Google, eBay and Amazon are among the most influential websites in Britain, according to a new report from Nielsen/NetRatings.

The web research firm identified the ten sites and online applications that have made the biggest impact on the internet in the UK and on society in general.

Google was included in the final ten (which were not ranked) for its rise to market leadership in the highly competitive search engine sector. It is one of the most visited websites and, says Nielsen, is "so successful it became a verb".

Also in the list is eBay, Europe's biggest ecommerce site. Continued Nielsen: "What Google did with information, eBay did with things -- pretty much anything you'd want can be found there."

Another ecommerce firm to make the top ten is Amazon, which is included for the way it pioneered personalised selling, while easyJet is cited for its impact on the airline and travel industry.

Completing the list are price comparison site Kelkoo, school update service Friends Reunited, internet publishing tool Blogger, music download site Napster, Microsoft Outlook and AOL Instant Messenger.
