Televisa Mulls Alternative US Network Plan

12 June 2006

MEXICO CITY - Grupo Televisa, Mexico's biggest broadcaster, could establish its own US network if it fails to acquire Univision Communications, the largest US Spanish-language television and radio group.

Televisa's plan B reportedly includes an alliance with NBC's Telemundo unit, Paxson Communications, or McGraw Hill. Each would offer it a platform for entry into the expanding Hispanic-American media market, which serves more than 10 million households.

However, the broadcaster's first choice remains the acquisition of Univision, valued at more than $12 billion (€9.47bn; £6.5bn), which it is pursuing as a member of a consortium [WAMN: 15-May-06].
