Tabloid Format Drives Sales for Britain's Independent

The launch of a tabloid edition continues to pay dividends for UK national broadsheet The Independent.

February figures from the Audit Bureau of Circulations show the title's sales were up 15.2% year-on-year. The commuter-friendly tabloid, launched in September, now accounts for 70.5% of its circulation.

Rival The Times, which launched a me-too compact version late last year, was down 2.2% compared with February 2003. Remaining broadsheets the Daily Telegraph and The Guardian, neither of which has introduced a tabloid, fell 2.3% and 9.6% respectively.
