Rumours of an imminent merger between UK cable rivals Telewest Communications and NTL were quashed yesterday by Telewest chief executive Adam Singer.
Speaking at an industry trade show, Singer declared: “There are no merger talks going on at the moment”, but added “whether they're planned for the future, your guess is as good as mine”.
Observers believe that the primary reason for the absence of a deal is the two companies’ respective debts. Telewest owes nearly £4 billion and NTL £9bn.
The duo are the only UK cable operators now competing against Rupert Murdoch’s BSkyB.
