Sweden’s Metro Title to Launch in Hong Kong

14 November 2001

Metro, one of Europe’s most successful new publishing formats, is to launch in Hong Kong during the first half of 2002, having clinched a deal with that city’s subway operator MTR Corporation.

Stockholm-headquartered Metro publishes its title, a free daily newspaper, in twenty-one cities across fifteen countries and in 14 different languages. Distribution, as the newspapers’ title implies, is via each city’s public transit system.

The Hong Kong contract, won by competitive public tender, meets all the company’s “criteria for development,” says Metro ceo Pelle Tornberg.

“This launch will be our first in Asia, where we see considerable opportunities to develop the Metro concept,” he enthused. “The city's subway system is the most efficient means of distribution for us, with 2.3 million passengers commuting on the network each day. We are looking forward to working with MTR to launch the new edition next year.”
