Sun Sets on Japanese Business Confidence

12 February 2008

TOKYO: Business gloom among Japan's economic trend-watchers deepened in January for the tenth month running, plumbing its lowest depth in seventy-three months.

According to a government survey published last week, the confidence crash has been triggered by consumer concerns at the continuing increase in commodity prices.

According to Japan's Economy Watchers Survey, the diffusion index for current economic conditions stood at 31.8 in January, down 4.8 points from December.
