Sorrell Hedges His Olympic Bets

20 May 2005

One of the loudest voices in global advertising, that of Sir Martin Sorrell, appears to be multilingual when it comes to the hotly contested bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games.

The true Brit head of the WPP Group has expressed his personal support for London's offering, but several agencies belonging to his London-headquartered marketing conglomerate are backing others in the race.

Ogilvy & Mather is working on the Paris bid; PR shop Burson Marstellar is lending its expertise to Moscow; and WPP businesses in the US have New York's best interests at heart.

And to cover all the bases, WPP brand consultancy Landor Associates has undertaken a lengthy rebranding of outsider Madrid in the hope of kick-starting its struggling Games campaign.

The result of the International Olympic Committee's deliberations is to be announced on July 6 in Singapore.

And the winner is ... Sir Martin Sorrell.
