Sony Signals $1bn Global Media Contest

03 July 2001

Portents that Sony Corporation plans to consolidate its $1 billion global media planning/buying business within a single agency are emanating from its Tokyo headquarters.

Insiders report that Nobuyuki Idei, chairman/ceo of the electronics titan, has invited pitches from Starcom Mediavest, MindShare, The Media Edge and Zenith Media – all of which handle various slices of Sony business across the world.

Although Sony’s domestic account will almost certainly remain with Dentsu, word is that nothing will be excluded from the global review, including Sony Pictures Entertainment, despite yesterday’s report that it will remain with Universal McCann [WAMN: 02-Jul-01].
