Sony Searches for LCD Screen Supplier

14 June 2006

TOKYO - The Sony Corporation is seeking a new supplier of liquid crystal display panels for television screens to make up for a possible shortage.

The electronics and entertainment conglomerate said supplies from S-LCD, its venture with South Korea's Samsung Electronics, would not be enough to meet its plan to sell six million LCD TV sets this business year to March.

Sony's Bravia brand has been selling well since its launch, but securing enough panels to meet strong growth in flat TV demand is crucial for any maker. Rival Sharp lost its position as the number one LCD TV maker in the final quarter of 2005, mainly due to supply shortages.
