UK SUPERMARKETEERS, sensitive to recent allegations of profiteering by the Office of Fair Trading, commissioned market researcher A C Nielsen to puncture the OFT’s case. Nielsen’s study for the British Retail Consortium is based on prices for a ‘basket’ of 32 selected goods in a number of European countries. These range from shampoos to bananas. The BRC has already countered that the OFT charges are based on ‘misleading and out-of-date research’ and its report concludes that the goods carefully selected in its survey are cheaper here than in Belgium, France, Germany and the Netherlands. Only in Italy would shoppers have paid less.
