Profits Soar at Mexico’s Televisa

02 May 2003

Mexico’s leading broadcaster Grupo Televisa has more than tripled first-quarter profits after ad revenue climbed.

Televisa – the world’s number one producer of Hispanic programming – posted Q1 net income of 250.1 million pesos ($24.4m; €21.8m; £15.2m), up from 70.1m pesos a year earlier. Revenues increased 4.8% to 4.81 billion pesos as politicians raised their adspend before Mexico’s July elections. Its programme licensing, pay-TV and publishing operations all performed solidly as well.

Operating income at the group jumped nearly 20% to 926.9m pesos, while EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization) increased 15% to 1.3bn.
