Premier League Sells Overseas Broadcast Rights for £178m

26 February 2001

The English soccer Premier League, still on the hunt for a title sponsor, has sold the overseas broadcast rights for its matches to a consortium comprising NewsCorp, Octagon CSI, TW1 and Canal Plus.

The deal is worth £178 million over three years, a figure surpassing industry expectations.

Interpublic-owned sports and events marketing group Octagon will distribute the Premier League rights in Africa, Latin America, Israel and the Middle East; NewsCorp will do likewise in North America, Asia and Australasia; while the remaining bidders, under the banner of Sport Plus, will vend the rights in Europe.
