08 March 2001

Singer Tarkan Televetoglu, whose growing fame extends beyond his native Turkey, joins the ranks of pop personalities bought by Pepsico. The platoon of singing Pepsi-endorsers already includes the likes of Britney Spears, Kylie Minogue, Michael Jackson and the Spice Girls.

According to Nuri Suer of Ajans Tek, one of Pepsi's Turkish roster agencies, an official announcement is imminent, timed to coincide with the release of Tarkan’s latest album. Says Suer: “Tarkan is becoming a worldwide star very fast … he is popular not only in Europe but also in countries such as the US, Russia, Mexico and Japan."

Pepsi’s local bottler Tamek Holding is delighted at the signing: “We are very proud that Pepsi's agreement with Tarkan is not a local but a worldwide deal,” enthused chairman Melih Sipahioglu.

Although the terms of the deal are unknown, it will undoubtedly make a multi-billionaire of Tarkan - there are 880,000 Turkish lira to the US dollar.
