CHICAGO - The marketer of sports drink Gatorade, PepsiCo, this week filed a lawsuit in a US District Court seeking to halt an allegedly misleading ad campaign by Coca-Cola owned rival brand, Powerade Option.
The TV ad for Powerade features a race between two horse-drawn carts - one loaded with ten hay bales, the other with fifty. The cart with fewer bales easily cruises to victory, inferring that Powerade Option's 10 calories are more effective than Gatorade's 50 calories.
Complains Pepsi: "In other words, Coca-Cola is telling consumers that Powerade Option's fewer calories literally make you go faster. However, Coca-Cola cannot possibly substantiate this overall superiority claim."
