Best Practices for Digital Media guidelines have just been issued jointly by The Magazine Publishers of America and the American Society of Magazine Editors.

Designed for magazine websites, the best practices aim to ensure a clear and distinct separation of online editorial content from advertising. Among the recommendations are a disclosure page to declare any commissions paid by a site’s e-commerce partners, and an explanation of what the site's owners may do with user information obtained via cookies.

Compliance with the guidelines is voluntary, although there is a disciplinary provision that will disqualify persistent offenders against the code from competing in the ‘New Media’ category of the National Magazine Awards.
