Oz TV Drubs Radio in Profit Stakes

Across the board, the down-under commercial broadcasting industry enjoyed revenue growth of around six percent in 2003, reports the Australian Broadcasting Authority.

Radio's performance, however, was puny alongside that of its TV cousins. Although radio licensees posted a 6% rise in aggregated revenues to A$774.2 million ($563.93m; €466.98m; £314.92m), profit declined year-on-year by 2.1% to A$106.2m. The medium's market share is around 8% -- at which level it has stagnated for several years.

Commercial TV, on the other hand, enjoyed it both ways: revenues rose to A$345 billion while profits soared 23.3% to A$506.4m.

Another winner was the ABA itself. The regulatory body collected $216.1 million in licence fees, up 5.7% from last year. Fees from TV broadcasters rose 5.8% to A$199.8m; those from radio increased by $16.3 million from $800,000.
