Online tops TV for young Germans

BERLIN: Using the internet is a more popular pastime than watching television among young German consumers, a report has revealed.

Trade body BITKOM commissioned research firm the Forsa Institute to survey 700 people aged between 10 and 18 years old.

Overall, 68% of those polled named meeting with friends as their favourite pastime, while using the web posted 39% on the same measure.

Sport scored 37% and family activities 29%, ahead of listening to music or the radio, which secured a total of 29% from participants.

A further 23% cited playing computer games online or offline, matching the number that mentioned viewing broadcast content on television and watching DVDs.

"Although almost all teenagers use the internet, their activities with friends are more important," said August-Wilhelm Scheer, president of BITKOM.
