PARIS: Banking, watching video and instant messaging are among the most popular pastimes of internet users in France, a study has found.

Médiamétrie, the research firm, reported that there are now 39.5m web users in France, an expansion of 3m year on year, and equivalent to a penetration of 73%.

A 56% majority of this group currently utilise internet banking services, also an addition of 3m people, to 22.1m.

Elsewhere, 52.7% of the online population stream video via this route, an increase of almost 1m annually.

Instant messaging has seen uptake levels reach 47%, while 27% of people make video calls using connected phones, and 17.5% upload photos.

The number of consumers aged 65 years old-plus who access the web has also risen by nearly 1m during the last 12 months, and "silver surfers" aged 50 years old or more now contribute 30% of all users.
