New Bidder in Pay-Per-View Soccer Auction

06 March 2001

Quondam Channel 5 chief executive David Elstein is setting up a consortium to enter the race for the pay-per-view soccer rights of England’s Premier League.

Despite recent interest from terrestrial digital broadcaster OnDigital [WAMN: 29-Jan-01], the Premier League is yet to award the rights, which cover forty matches per season. An agreement with cable company NTL collapsed in October when the latter withdrew its £328 million offer.

The triumphant bidder will be obliged to sell on the rights to broadcasters such as BSkyB and OnDigital.
