NTL Poised to Overtake ITV Digital as No. Two Digital Broadcaster

06 August 2001

Britain’s largest cable TV company, US-owned NTL, could soon become the nation’s second largest digital operator despite recent fears over its viability because of mounting debts and job cuts [WAMN: 19-Jun-01; 27-Jun-01].

Seeking to reassure investors, the group is today expected to announce that its digital subscriber numbers have passed the one million mark. Currently number two in the digital market with 1.14m subscribers is terrestrial broadcaster ITV Digital, jointly owned by Carlton Communications and Granada Media. However, NTL is hot on its heels and attracting new customers at a faster rate.

Nevertheless, both operators trail far behind market leader BSkyB, which boasts 5.5m digital subscribers. Lagging in fourth place is cable firm Telewest, with 546,000.
