MySpace Leads Video US Download League

29 September 2006

LOS ANGELES: Social networking website MySpace, part of the News Corporation media empire, downloaded more videos than any other US online site in the month of July, according to internet researcher comScore Video Metrix.

MySpace's US users watched 1.5 billion videos in July, more than double the 649 million watched on cult video site YouTube.

Search giant Yahoo ranked number two in the figures. Its users are reported to have streamed 812m videos in July.

But while the companies are congratulating themselves on their popularity, none has yet found a reliable way to sell the new audiences to advertisers, comments Gartner analyst Allen Weiner.

He says the booming viewer numbers "show the pressing need all these companies have to come up with a way to insert ads".
