Murdoch Targets Gamers Site for Web Expansion

23 August 2005

Following reports that global media giant News Corporation is in talks to buy US video search engine Blinkx [WAMN: 17-Aug-05], chairman/ceo Rupert Murdoch is also rumoured to be targeting video gaming firm IGN Entertainment.

Murdoch has pledged to invest up to $2 billion (€1.61bn; £1.1bn) on internet acquisitions this year and could spend up to $800 million of this budget on IGN. He has already added to the NewsCorp stable with Scout Media, a sports web company, and social networking site Intermix.

IGN would offer NewsCorp entry into online gaming, being oriented toward the game and entertainment industries. The company's IGN, GameSpy, TeamXbox, and 3DGamers sites report on game news, while Rotten Tomatoes reports on the lighter side of moviemaking.

Both firms remained silent, citing company policies of not commenting on rumors or speculation.
