Murdoch Jnr Targets Europe's Chinese Community

19 January 2001

Star TV, run by James Murdoch, son of the more famous Dad, is to launch a Mandarin-language TV service in the UK and continental Europe.

The announcement was made at yesterday’s formal launch in London of Star’s two European Hindi channels – transmitted courtesy of Murdoch-controlled BSkyB in the UK – and the recent emergence on-air of its Mandarin channel in the USA.

Murdoch junior, chairman and chief executive of Hong Kong-based Star, said that the pay-TV company planned to air the channel “everywhere there is a Chinese community,” adding, “there is no precise timing but it will be in the near future.” )
