Murdoch Faces Pension Penury but Collects $27.1m En Route

20 August 2008

NEW YORK: Although yet to announce a retirement date, septuagenarian media mogul and inter-planetary political fixer Rupert Murdoch had best start hoarding his pennies.

According to a News Corporation proxy statement filed this week, chairman Murdoch's salary, bonus and stock compensation rose about 9% in the company's last fiscal year to $27.1 million (€18.38m; £14.53m).

The sad news, however, is that the tycoon's total compensation fell 14% due to an accounting change that has sapped the worth of his retirement savings.

Which some folk* fear might eventually result in his having to spend his declining years in the attic bedroom at chez James, Lachlan or Elisabeth.
