Moscow Mayor's Multi-Millionaire Missus Mugs Magazine

23 March 2007

MOSCOW: Maxim Kashulinsky, editor of the Russian edition of Forbes magazine, has learned the hard way: never ask awkward questions about a business run by the multi-millionaire missus of the Moscow Mayor.

Kashulinsky's wallet is now $4,100 (€3,070; £2,084) lighter as a result of its owner's undiplomatic inquiry into the business affairs of Mrs Moscow, aka Yelena Baturina (pictured).

Under the impression that in 2006/7 it was safe in Putin's paradise for journalists to probe oligarchical activities, Kashulinsky explored Baturina's meteoric rise to ownership of Inteko, one of Moscow's biggest construction and real estate firms.

In the December issue of Forbes he also discussed allegations that Mrs Mayor's firm had benefited from her husband's position. The lawsuit, naming Kashulinsky and Forbes' Russian publisher Axel Springer, arrived in February, alleging the magazine had injured the firm's reputation.

This week, the Chertanovo District Court found the editor guilty of "disseminating false information" and levied the fine. The case against Axel Springer will be heard next month.
