MindShare Goes Quadrilateral

30 March 2001

The UK unit of WPP’s media planning and buying arm, MindShare, is in the throes of a strategic restructure into four divisions – Futures, Communications, Investment and mdigital.

Three of the four divisions will be headed by one of MindShare’s seventeen managing partners. Simon Francis heads Futures; Rosie Faulkner takes the helm at Communications; and Jed Glanvill leads mdigital. A yet-to-be-appointed ‘heavyweight media buyer’ will steer the Investment division.

The Futures operation will liase with other WPP companies in the development of new projects and services. It incorporates the company’s research units Consumer Insight and Advanced Techniques Group. Communications houses MindShare’s newly created client services department, as well as WOW Factory, MindShare Business to Business and MindShare Dialect. The digital media division, mdigital, is to operate as a gateway to WPP's other digital activities.

The four divisional directors will share between them the duties of managing director, a role left vacant by Simon Rees when he replaced Mandy Pooler as MindShare chief executive earlier this month [WAMN: 14-Mar-01].

Says Rees: “It is important that we offer both clients and investors a focal point for discussions. It is also imperative that we look to change the nature of trading for our clients' benefit, investing in new research, new systems, new ways of dealing and doing business.”

Industry observers believe the revamp could be a template for restructuring other national offices of MindShare.
