Microsoft compromises on Telewest bid

07 July 2000

After reports that the EC intended to block Microsoft’s bid for Telewest [WAMN 03-July-00], Microsoft has now made new concessions. A Microsoft spokesman confimed that "we are submitting new undertakings to the Commission and will continue to be in discussion with the Commission about them".

Industry sources revealed that Microsoft is considering giving up joint control of Telewest, and allowing Telewest to access Microsoft’s software. The source commented: "If Microsoft doesn’t get joint control, there’s no need to notify the deal for review. In that case, the Commission no longer has jurisdiction, so the problem would be solved." However, Commission spokeswoman Amelia Torres denied any moves to block Microsoft: "There is no decision until the Commission has decided on it. It’s completely premature to say the Commission is to block the deal."
