Microsoft Readies $400m XP Launch

10 May 2001

Microsoft is to back the upcoming launch of its Windows XP operating system with a marketing push valued at an estimated $400 million.

The software titan stated that the XP launch, slated for October 25, will be the “biggest Windows marketing event in Microsoft history – doubling the [$200m] investment of the Windows 95 launch in the first four months of product availability alone.”

It will coincide with the $500m campaign introducing Microsoft’s game console Xbox, bringing the group’s marketing spend this fall to nearly $1 billion.

Rubbing its hands in glee at the billings bonanza is McCann-Erickson, which will handle the campaigns from its New York and San Francisco offices.
