Meerstadt Quits Helm of Y&R Europe to Play Trains

17 May 2001

The irresistible appeal of playing trains has lured Bert Meerstadt from the cloistered environs of Young & Rubicam where he is currently chief executive officer responsible for Europe, Middle East and Africa, to the clattering tracks of the Dutch railway system.

After nine years with Y&R, three of them in his present London-based role, he will join the Nederlandse Spoorwegan, this summer in the main board role of chief commercial officer.

The decision to leave Y&R, said Meerstadt, a Dutch national, “was not easy”, but having helped steer Y&R’s integration into the WPP infrastructure, “my wife Fleur and I feel that the time has come for our family to move back to The Netherlands.”

Young & Rubicam Advertising ceo Ed Vick paid tribute to Meerstadt, pointing to the high standing of the EMEA region within the network. Under Meerstadt’s leadership, it had seen record growth with over twenty mergers and acquisitions.

Meerstadt will be replaced as of July 1 by Etienne Boisrand (49), a former ceo of Y&R France and chairman of Y&R in Asia.
