Martha Stewart Signs With Sirius Satellite Radio

20 April 2005

Recent jailbird, now comeback queen, Martha Stewart has signed a $30 million (€23m, £15.7m) radio deal.

The US gracious living guru, currently under five months house arrest following a prison term of similar length for obstruction of justice, is to create a 24-hour women's lifestyle channel for Sirius Satellite Radio.

She is, understandably, "very excited" about the four-year agreement with the radio company, which runs around 120 stations across the US and has 1.2m subscribers.

The deal is Stewart's latest attempt to rehabilitate herself and reinvigorate her ailing company, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. Gushes the guru: "Of all the things I have done in the last few years ... radio is actually one of the most enjoyable."

Stewart will join shock jock Howard Stern on the Sirius celebrity roster. He was signed last year for a reported $500m over five years. The pair are the company's big guns in the war against US number one XM Radio with its 3.8m subscribers.

Says Sirius ceo Mel Karmazin: "We believe that this will bring subscribers and advertisers."
