Marketing Musical Chairs at General Motors

John Middlebrook (63), vp of North American marketing and advertising at General Motors, moves up the greasy pole to become vice president of global sales, service and marketing, reporting directly to chief executive Rick Wagoner.

Middlebrook's role will be taken by Mark LaNeve (45), currently divisional marketing general manager for the Cadillac marque; while he in turn is replaced by Jim Taylor (47).

The former reports to John Smith, group vice president of North American sales, service and marketing -- as does Mike Giovanni (56) as executive director of strategic marketing, a new post

The new marketing setup is completed by Susan Doherty (41) who moves into Giovanni's shoes as Hummer brand divisional marketing manager.

Ceo Wagoner pronounced his benediction on the newly anointed marketing supremo: "[John] will lead our efforts to implement the best practices in GM's sales, service and marketing operations around the globe, and provide expertise and support to our four automotive regions to improve their capabilities in these critical areas."

All appointments take effect September 1.
