McCann-Erickson WorldGroup has been awarded the global creative advertising account for Germany's national airline Lufthansa – said to be worth between $25 million to $30m annually. As a result, McCann will open a new office in Berlin this fall.

The decision follows a beauty parade of some of the adworld’s finest: Wieden & Kennedy, Amsterdam; Young & Rubicam, Frankfurt (which adapted Lufthansa ads for international markets); Grey Worldwide, Duesseldorf; and J Walter Thompson, Frankfurt. Former incumbent Springer & Jacoby International, London, did not pitch.

McCann, however, failed to complete the double, missing out on the airline’s media planning/buying business, value unstated. This transfers from Y&R's Media Edge to the Frankfurt office of WPP Group's MindShare.

The first ads by the new kids on the block will appear before the year end.
