Japan Starts TV Broadcasts to Cellphones

04 April 2006

TOKYO - Digital TV broadcasting for mobile devices, such as cellphones and PDAs, started this weekend in the Japanese metropolitan areas of Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya.
Unlikely, initially, to influence overall TV viewing figures, the primary impact is expected to be on cellphone sales. According to Tadashi Onodera, president of broadcaster/telco KDDI Corporation: "We expect an increase in the number of compatible models to expand our customer base.
At the outset, programs are the same as those aired on digital terrestrial broadcasting channels. Viewing is free, and no call rates are charged on cellphones
