Indian Telecoms Watchdog Seeks Junk Calls Solution

NEW DELHI: India's consumers are still plagued by unsolicited telephone sales calls, despite the sub-continent's Do Not Call Registry, reports the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of India

The watchdog is under intense pressure from cellphone operators, customers, the media and the Supreme Court to find a solution, and is reportedly seeking tougher penalties for persistent offenders.

Lawmakers last year suggested that the Registry switch from an opt-out to an opt-in service, because sales calls have proved almost impossible to police. Call centres often switch cellphone networks when they have been disconnected from one service.

Operators have suggested that those who continue to flout the rules should be blacklisted and information about them exchanged in the same way banks warn each other about habitual credit card defaulters.
