ITV Ratings Bid: Premiership Soccer 0, Weakest Link 1

21 August 2001

In its £183 million bid to unseat the BBC from the top of Britain’s Saturday evening viewing league, ITV Network pinned its hopes on its exclusive screenings of Premiership [Premier League] soccer series, which kicked off this weekend.

Toe-to-toe with current champion, BBC1’s The Weakest Link, the Premiership made an inauspicious start attracting an audience of only 4.3 million to the weekend’s key viewing slot, compared with the 6.7m who tuned-in to watch Anne Robinson do her hard woman act.
