ITC Gives Green Light to ITV News Challenge

22 May 2001

A consortium of five media and news companies – among them BSkyB – has won regulatory approval to bid for the contract to supply news to the UK’s largest commercial television network, ITV.

The Independent Television Commission announced it had awarded the consortium, Channel Three News, the status of ‘nominated news provider’ – the first time anyone other than ITV’s current news supplier, ITN, has been granted that title.

The quintet aiming to unseat ITN are BSkyB, Bloomberg LP, Chrysalis Group, Ulster Television and Viacom-owned CBS – each holding a 20% stake in Channel Three.

ITN, on the other hand, is a joint venture between Granada Media and Carlton Communications (the two largest ITV companies), alongside United Business Media, Daily Mail & General Trust and Reuters Group.

ITN’s current contract expires at the end of 2002.
