Reflecting the growing importance of its non-advertising interests, Interpublic Group yesterday appointed Bruce S Nelson (48) to co-ordinate its differing activities worldwide.

In addition to traditional advertising, these now include programming and consulting, interactive and direct marketing, public relations and media/research services.

The main Interpublic units are Draft Worldwide, Initiative Media Worldwide, Lowe Group, McCann-Erickson World Group and the newly created PR group Weber Shandwick Worldwide [WAMN: 20-Sep-00]. Non-advertising activities are expected to account for around half of all group revenues in the current fiscal.

Nelson, who becomes executive vice president and chief marketing officer, boasts an unusually diverse advertising background, having previously worked in account handling, creative and strategic roles. Formerly vice chairman and chief knowledge officer at Young & Rubicam, he left in September last year, taking a year’s break to spend more time with his family.
