Rupert Murdoch looks set to strengthen his toehold in the Chinese television market after striking a deal with domestic operator Hunan Broadcasting Group.
In the first partnership between a Chinese broadcaster and a foreign firm, Hunan and News Corporation’s Asian satellite-TV arm Star Group will co-produce shows. These will be broadcast throughout central China on Hunan’s channels as well as on Star, whose presence in the nation is currently restricted to Guangdong province.
Murdoch is desperate to gain access to the fastest-growing media market in the world. He finally gained permission for limited broadcasting last year, following an eight-year drive to repair the damage caused by his 1993 comment that satellite TV posed a “threat to totalitarian regimes everywhere” [WAMN: 20-Dec-02].
