Half of Britain's homes now have internet access, according to new figures from telecoms regulator Oftel.

Some 12.5 million households are now online, with 750,000 connecting to the net in the last three months.

Oftel also estimates that around one million dial-up customers will convert to always-on broadband connections within twelve months.
