Growth Slows in US Service Sector

07 October 2003

US service-sector growth slowed last month, according to a new study from the Institute for Supply Management.

The ISM's non-manufacturing index stood at 63.3 in September – well above the 50.0 threshold between expansion and contraction, but down on August's 65.1.

The employment gauge fell from 51.0 to 49.1, marking the first decline in the workforce for four months. However, continued strong growth in new orders bodes well for the future.
