Google maintains US search lead

RESTON, VA: Google captured a 66.2% share of the US search market in November to beat out rivals including Microsoft's Bing, according to a new comScore report.

The world's largest search engine suffered a slight fall in market share, having registered 66.3% in October.

These totals refer to the proportion of "explicit core searches" conducted by US web users over the month.

The comScore metric is defined as "user engagement with a search service with the intent to retrieve search results".

Sites run by Yahoo! came in second for explicit core search, falling from 16.5% to 16.4%.

But Bing, which has been heavily promoted over recent months, rose from 11.5% to 11.8% and was the only company in the top six to gain market share.

Overall, 16bn explicit core searches were conducted in the US in November.

Meanwhile, Google also topped the charts for the broader "total core search" measure - which includes partner searches, cross-channel searches and contextual searches.

The firm scored 64.3%, ahead of Yahoo's 19.3% and Microsoft's 11.3%.

In all, 17.8bn total core searches were conducted over the course of the month.
