Google boosts position in China

BEIJING: Google, the online search giant, has boosted its advertising revenue in China by 25% quarter-on-quarter over the last three months according to reports, despite coming under increasing pressure from the country's government over recent weeks.

Sources in China have estimated that the company's operating revenues in the world's most populous nation increased by at least 45% year-on-year in Q2.

Its share of the search market also rose by 3% in the first half of 2009, seemingly confirming previous analysis suggesting Google is making in-roads in a key target country.

Earlier this year, Google launched a free online music service in China, as it sought to enhance its position relative to the number one search portal in the country, Baidu.

However, the Chinese authorities have become increasingly critical of the search provider, arguing it was "severely endangering China's youth" by enabling people to access pornography.

The country's government also instructed Google to disable certain options on its homepage that allowed internet users to view unauthorised foreign language websites.
