Good News for UK Adfolk, Better News for Lawyers!

23 September 2005

The amount spent on advertising job vacancies in the marketing, creative, media and interactive sectors in UK trade magazine Marketing Week increased by three per cent in the year to June 30, according to publisher Centaur Holdings.

Encouraging though this may be, adfolk fared badly alongside lawyers and financial executives, with ad revenues in The Lawyer soaring 20% - seven times that of its marketing counterpart.

Overall advertising revenues at Centaur itself rose by 8%, driven by an 18% rise in recruitment listings. Fiscally, however, the picture was less cheery, with a net loss of £144,000 ($260,596; €213,463) - due largely to one-off charges of £7.1 million in amortisation of goodwill created by the company's accelerated IPO last year. This compares with the previous year's profit of £540,000.

Thanks to the eccentricity of the UK tax system, however, Centaur posted pretax profits of £2.62m.
