Glamour and Cosmo Struggle for Lead in Women’s Lifestyle Market, Reports ABC

The latest readership data from Britain’s Audit Bureau of Circulations for the first six months of the year, shows Glamour (published by Condé Nast) and Cosmopolitan (National Magazine Company) vying for leadership in the women’s lifestyle market.

Both recorded circulations of just over 450,000, with Cosmopolitan slightly ahead, though Glamour can claim higher sales in the UK.

Glamour’s successful launch in the Spring dented the circulation figures of sister titles Company (223,121) and She (182,790). With 370,089, IPC’s Marie Claire fell for the second consecutive period, but worst hit was Woman’s Journal, whose slump in sales to 110,010 will spark speculation over its future.

Vogue fell slightly to 201,279, while Elle posted a year-on-year rise to 224,410. Red regained most of the ground lost in the last set of figures, rising to 172,793.

In the men’s lifestyle sector, Emap’s FHM led the field with 700,172, though it posted its first fall since February 2000. Rival lad mag Loaded registered a double-digit fall to 305,444, while Esquire, with 62,005, saw its first period-on-period increase for three years.
