German TV Audiences Are Reunited

A long-term research project in Germany reveals the once divided nation's TV audiences have finally converged.

A study conducted for leading pay-TV operator ProSiebenSat.1 by marketer SevenOne Media says in 1991, one year after official reunification, Germany's TV preferences were clearly split down the East-West divide.

Viewers in the east preferred private channels to the propaganda-fuelled state-run offerings; while those living in the West chose publicly-run services.

In recent years, however, the study claims differences between the two have disappeared as east Germans have lost their distrust of public TV and west Germans have been seduced by commercial TV.

Pronounces SevenOne Media's Daniel Haberfeld: "There is hardly any difference today in programme choice between the east and west."
