German New Car Market Sees First Upturn of 2001

11 September 2001

Germany’s new car market last month showed its first signs of growth this year, according to the VDA car industry federation.

A total of 255,000 new cars were registered in August, up 1% on twelve months before – the first month to register a year-on-year rise in 2001 so far. The initial seven months of the year posted a 2.5% fall in registrations, though the decline had narrowed to 1% in July.

August also saw a 1% year-on-year growth in domestic car orders, again the first increase of the year. Allied to a 22% rise in car exports, this produced a 21% jump in German car production.
