GM is Overtaken by Sports Car Plug

US number one carmaker General Motors is finding it tough to keep up with the power of advertising.

Its new Pontiac Solstice model, plugged by outrageously coiffeured billionaire Donald Trump on his hit TV show The Apprentice, has been beset by factory production glitches, causing customers to be kept waiting.

GM was rubbing its hands with glee when it racked-up online orders for one thousand of the sports cars in just 41 minutes following the TV show in April. Thirteen thousand Solstice autos are now reserved, but only "some dozens" have been delivered to their frustrated new owners.

Although the company is not expecting to sell more than twenty thousand of the $19,995 (€16,216; £11,100) cars each year, the Solstice is being touted as the new face of the Pontiac brand.

GM's communications vp Tom Kowaleski has apologised to buyers for the delays.
