GM Tests New E-tail Scheme with Autobytel

22 February 2001

Auto giant General Motors has hired independent car e-tailer to conduct a 90-day test for its revamped e-commerce operation.

GM has been urging its 7,800 US dealers to commit to a $50 million e-tail scheme. Autobytel will conduct the trial, offering consumers information on the GM vehicles available in their area and the prices on offer at different dealerships.

If the test is successful, GM may purchase a stake in Autobytel (or another third-party auto e-tailer) in an attempt to tap in to the 75% of consumers who would rather look for a vehicle on independent auto websites than on a car company’s official site.

GM has not yet announced where the trial – due to start around May 1 – will take place or what brand/s will participate.
